Training and Education
Local 317 is committed to developing and providing training to our members. Local 317 conducts training classes on a regular basis. These classes are held at our union office and are available to members and the public. Additionally, the union sponsors the Power Engineering program at Milwaukee Area Technical College-South Campus where a full diploma program is offered. Power Engineering is a field that requires skills in a variety of fields including boiler operation, equipment repair, industrial maintenance, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, energy conservation and other areas.
FACILITY OPERATING 3 - LOW PRESSURE BOILER CLASS
NEW CLASS!! Starts: August 9th, 2010
This course is designed for entry level low pressure restricted boiler operators, custodians, and building engineers. This course will also prepare the student to pass the American Society of Power Engineers, Facility Operating Engineer 3rd class license exam. Successful students will receive a certificate of completion from IUOE Local 317. The ASOPE examination may be scheduled upon satisfactory completion of the course.
Course includes: Basic boiler design and operation, steam principles, combustion, heat transfer, fuels, HVAC and refrigeration basics, electrical, math, safety and personal protective equipment.
Cost is $400.00 which includes textbooks and materials. Students are expected to provide their own spiral notebook, pens and pencils.
Class will start on Monday, August 9th, 2010, and continue on consecutive Mondays for 10 weeks. ASOPE examination will be held on the last day. Classes will be held from 5:30p.m. to 8:30p.m. at the Local 317 Office located at 3152 South 27th Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53215 (across the street from Leon’s at 27th and Oklahoma).
Cost is $400.00 which includes textbooks and materials. Students are expected to provide their own spiral notebook, pens and pencils.

Refund Policy: After August 9th, 80% refund; after August 16th, 60% refund; after August 23rd, 2010, no refund.

FACILITY OPERATING 2 - HIGH PRESSURE BOILER CLASS

This course is designed for current holders of a Power Engineering license, who wish to upgrade or those with previous boiler operation experience to prepare for the American Society of Power Engineers Facility Operating 2nd class license (High Pressure). Successful students will receive a certificate of completion from IUOE Local 317. The ASOPE examination will be scheduled upon satisfactory completion of the course.
Course includes: Boiler design and components, steam principles, economizers, air heaters, combined cycle gas turbines, fuels, boiler emissions and controls, burner technology, water chemistry and boiler maintenance.
Cost is $400.00 which includes textbooks and materials. Students are expected to provide their own spiral notebook, pens and pencils.

ADVANCED BOILER CLASSES
Advanced Boiler Operation Class
This course is designed for current holders of a Power Engineering License who wish to upgrade or those with previous boiler operation experience to prepare for the American Society of Power Engineers Power Plant Operating Engineer, First or Second Class license examination. Successful students will receive a certificate of completion from IUOE Local 317. The ASOPE examination may be scheduled upon satisfactory completion of the course.
Course includes: pumps, turbines, generators, condensers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, dearerators, boiler water treatment, thermo expansion traps, steam separators, lubrication systems, environmental controls, emissions, baghouses, plant duties and related paperwork, interpersonal relationships, OSHA rules and math for power engineers.
Classes will be held from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at the Local 317 office located at 3152 South 27th Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53215 (across the street from Leon’s at 27th and Oklahoma). ASOPE examination may be held on the last day.
Cost is $500.00 which includes textbooks. Students are expected to provide their own spiral notebook, pens and pencils.
